What were they like as kings? This course looks at the reigns and lives of the three male Tudor monarchs. We discuss Henry VII’s legacy to his son and the myth and legend of six times married Henry VIII. Was Henry VIII a ‘great’ king and forward thinking reformer, or was he a self-obsessed and callous tyrant who was willing to destroy religious institutions and people for his own selfish ends? Finally, we look at the brief reign of Edward VI. If he had lived, what impact would he have had on England? Saturday 31st January 2009 Tudor Queens – 16th Century Girl Power This course carries on from ‘Tudor Tyrants.’ After Edward VI died a political coup put Lady Jane Grey on the throne of England, how and why did this happen? What events and factors shape the reign of Mary of Tudor and turned her from being ‘Great Harry’s daughter’ into the vilified Bloody Mary of contemporary popular opinion? When Mary died her 25 year old sister, Elizabeth inherited the throne. How did this young woman take England from a third rate European power to one which took on the might of the Spanish Armada and won? Who helped her, who opposed her and what inner qualities made Elizabeth arguably the greatest of all British monarchs?
